Although there are many stories about the reason of Holi celebration, the one which is most prominent is the Hindu Belief of mythical stories related of the triumph of truth and devotion over evil.

According to ancient story, there was an Evil King “named Hiranyakashayap, He was blessed with immortality by the lord Shiva, that he cannot killed by anyone; Neither by Human nor by Animal, Neither Inside his castle nor outside his Castle, Neither on Earth nor on the Air. With such blessing he renounced himself as God and forced his citizens to call him as a God.

Hiranyakashayap and his Wife Kyadahnu, welcomed his first son named “Prahalad”, who become the devotee of lord Vishnu from the age of his consciousness, chanting mantras for the Vishnu in all his waking hours. His father Hiranyakashayap, is deeply troubled by his son devotions toward Lord Vishnu, and forced him to praise himself and the not the lord Vishnu. However, he continued his devotion against his father will.

One day Hiranyakashayap become very angry with his son’s devotions, and declared him as no longer his own. He starts Brooding ways to kill his son and asked his sister Holika to kill Prahalad. Holika was blessed by the God of Fire “Agni Dev”, that she can never be burn by the fire. With her blessing, she took Prahalad on her lap and sat on a large bon fire, and asked minstrel to set the fire. Prahalad continued his Chanting “On Namo Narayana” while sitting on Holika’s lap, the fire rises and engulf Holika in it, Prahalad remain unharmed.

And this is why Hindu Celebrate Holi festival after death of the fire witch Holika. Holi is a two days celebration, the first day observed to be the Holika Dehan, in which they set the fire on Holika’s Puppet on a large bon fire.

Continuing the story, Hiranyakashayap with his agony asked Prahalad “If you praise your lord, where is he now. Why can’t I see him?”, Prahalad answered “He is everywhere” With this answer from his son Hiranyakashayap start breaking the wall, and when he hit the pillar “The Lord Vishnu as his Nar Singha Avatar emerged from one of the Pillar, He was neither Human nor Animal, and suspended Hiranyakashayap on his lap, which was neither on air nor on earth, and killed him on the entrance which was neither inside nor outside of his palace. And this is how he ended the Evil King Hiranyakashayap.

This is one of the great Hindu legend stories of the triumph of Goodness against Evil, devotion against arrogance and Faith against ego.

Holi festival is celebrated as the remembrance of good over Evil, which has been celebrated as a long Hindu Tradition festival from the ancient period.
